Kukeri Carnival "Starchevata"

Every year on January 1, the central square of Razlog comes alive with Starcheva, a centuries-old local tradition. Kukeri (locally known as chaushi), maidens, young men, and survakari from the town’s seven neighborhoods gather to symbolically drive away evil, mark the end of the old year, and welcome a new beginning. The rituals blend pagan beliefs with Christian values, centering on renewal, fertility, and prosperity. A key moment is led by the group elder, who performs the symbolic plowing and sowing of seeds for abundance in the year ahead. The chaushi’s striking costumes—crafted over an entire year from goat skins, elaborate masks, and heavy bells—are unique in Bulgaria. Starcheva’s authenticity and living tradition have earned Razlog recognition as a European carnival city and mark the opening of the International Kukeri Festival, held each January under the patronage of Razlog Municipality and the Federation of European Carnival Cities (FECC). the Kukeri procession will begin at 11:00 AM with the First kukeri group and will continue until 2:00 PM. What to expect 09:30 — Registration Sign up for the two main games: “Join the Champion’s Team” and “Treasure Hunters.” 11:00 — Game 1 Starts Take part in “Join the Champion’s Team” and compete in a friendly, dynamic mountain challenge. 12:00 — Mass Ski Slide Enjoy the traditional ski descent featuring stars and young athletes from the ULEN ski school. 12:00 — Live DJ & Percussion Show DJ Alexandros Traw and Anastasis Voukis bring high-energy music and live percussion to keep the mountain vibes going. 13:00 — Treasure Hunters + Award Ceremony The second game begins, followed by the prize ceremony for both competitions.

It's Christmas quiz time, and we're bringing you back to an all time favourite venue - Smokey Mountain 🎄 Tasty food, friendly staff, and helping us to raise funds ... Win, win, win! 🏆 Entry is 10lev per person. Booking is essential. We have limited spaces, so book early to avoid disappointment 😁 This event will finish by 10.30pm.
